Canon Point: S01/E08

Age: 37
Appearance: image

History: wiki. Since there are key differences between the manga and the live adaptation, I'll include a rundown of what information we can take from the LA canon:

Early Life.
  • Buggy has pretty much only known life as a pirate. When he was a boy, he started as an apprentice crewmember alongside Red Haired Shanks as part of the Roger Pirates. The two were apparently fairly close, sworn friends and brothers, until a betrayal set them apart. Buggy says it's because Shanks was jealous of his star shining too brightly. This caused a lot of resentment on Buggy's part, which led to him ultimately leaving and getting his own ship.
  • Somewhere during this time period, Buggy ate the Chop Chop Devil Fruit.
After obtaining his own crew, The Buggy Pirates operated in the East Blue. During this time, Buggy adopted his clown persona. His crew also adopted
  • the act of circus performers, where Buggy seemed to insist they learn and put on performances.

  • Current Canon
  • We first see Buggy in the show in current time in Orange Town, where he's taken the villagers as a captive audience and utterly wrecked the entire village. We see him angrily complaining about the performance his crew is putting on since it's ill-practiced and ill-timed. This is after he's managed to kidnap Luffy, Zoro, and Nami.
  • This is additionally where we learn that apparently Buggy had been planning to steal the map to the Grand Line for weeks before Luffy managed to walk right in and get his hands on it. Angered by this, he devised a plan to kidnap him with every intention of taking it for himself.
  • With Luffy refusing to give up the map, Buggy decides to torture him. During this, he learns that Luffy knew Shanks and reveals that he served with him. He tells Luffy of the struggles in an effort to relate, but Luffy isn't interested in hearing anyone talk badly about Shanks.
  • Ultimately, when he can't get the information he wants, he decides to drown Luffy in sea water. When Zoro and Nami come to save Luffy, we get to see Buggy use his Chop Chop abilities to their full capacity.
  • Ultimately, it still ends with Buggy in a miniature form and most of his limbs in chests. After Luffy and the others depart, Buggy is left to piece himself back together. With his crew scattered, Buggy is alone when Arlong's crew come to him. To get out of becoming lunch, Buggy makes a deal to help track Luffy and the map.
  • The next time we see Buggy, he has been reduced to just his head, with the Arlong Pirates keeping his body hostage at Arlong Park. Too far away to retrieve it himself, he agrees to help Luffy locate Nami and Arlong.
  • Buggy travels along with Luffy and crew, but predictably, the minute he gets a chance to get his body back, he ditches them (even after promising to help them fight).
  • Later on, we see Buggy in one piece at a tavern somewhere, looking at Luffy's new wanted poster. He swears revenge on him and seems to meet the fellow pirate captain, Alvida.

  • Personality:
    Positive Trait: Resilience
This clown never gives up, simply put. When his map to the Grand Line was taken from the Marine base, Buggy tracked down the Straw Hat Pirates who took it with every intention of doing whatever possible to get it back. When Arlong threatened his life, Buggy fought like Hell to survive, even if it reduced him to a bodyless head. When Luffy 'cut him down to size' and left him as nothing more than a head and feet and hands, Buggy moved his tiny little body back to his circus to retrieve the rest of his limbs. He has been a pirate for a very long time, and never once has the clown ever laid down and just said die despite facing a life of hardship with not only an unusual appearance, but also with Shanks to compete with. Buggy has an undeniable spirit to keep living and trying, even in the least flattering circumstances.

    Negative Trait: Resentment
Resentment oozes out of every pore of this clown. During his face off with Luffy, the very minute Buggy recognizes who his straw hat belongs to, Buggy can't resist the pull to tell him about how he feels Shanks betrayed him. Despite considering him a friend, Buggy bitterly remarks about how Shanks was jealous of how brightly he shines and tried to push him into the shadows. It's been over twenty years since he last saw Shanks, but it's clear in the pain on his face that the hurt is as fresh as the day it was made. Buggy can clearly hold on to a grudge, for better or worse. You can tell he resents his nose, a feature he was born with that has left him feeling like an outcast more often than not, and he definitely resents the Straw Hat Pirates for actually posing a challenge.

    Negative Trait: Greed
Buggy's first love is treasure above all else. It's part of the reason he thrives in the life of a pirate. Collecting treasure maps is said to be his hobby according to the series creator, Oda, and he thinks it's loot that makes the pirate over anything else. In the second episode of the series, we see Buggy weakly crawl towards the map of the Grand Line after he's been doused by seawater, displaying just how deep his greed goes. He'll place the promise of a treasure map above his own personal well-being. He also holds a fair amount of anger towards Luffy for challenging his attempt to reach the Grand Line and becoming King of the Pirates, a title that Buggy feels will award him all the wealth and fame he craves.

    Negative Trait: Narcissism
Buggy the Clown, Buggy the Genius Jester, Buggy the Flashy Fool. He's a star and he won't let anybody forget it. He refers to his crew in the third episode of the series as his 'supporting cast' so casually, this must be a common occurrence and reminder for the lot of them not to steal his spotlight. Additionally, he berates them in the second episode for messing up his grand entrance to the Buggy Circus. He's not thrilled they messed up the star clown's big chance to make an impression in the slightest.

And for all his sometimes obvious inferiority complex, especially regarding his nose, Buggy puts a lot of care into his appearance. His makeup is impeccable, his lashes are impressively long, his clothing is flashy, and his hat has little tassels that may or may not be his actual hair to sway dramatically whenever he moves. Everything seems meticulously planned out and accentuated to what he wants to play up the most. It's clear this clown takes a lot of pride in his appearance.

It's also clear that Buggy has an innate desire to perform and have all eyes on him. He admits to Luffy that he has a desire to be loved by those around him, but he'll take fear too. As long as he's noticed for the clown he is.
br> In a more sinister twist to his vanity and need for praise, we also see Buggy take a captive audience that he forces to cheer and laugh for him, seemingly to feed his ego during his circus performance.

Powers and Abilities: Chop Chop Devil Fruit
  • Having eaten this devil fruit type as a kid, it's granted Buggy the ability to be cut up and diced but always reassemble his body. He doesn't seem to bleed when cut and can withstand high impact by separating his body parts to equal it out. It doesn't seem to end there, either! He can separate his limbs at will and control them all independently through some form of telekinesis. He also maintains feeling and control in his separated limbs to perform intricate attacks, up to and including dicing himself into such small pieces, he's near impossible to outright attack.

That said, the fruit has a downside. Getting seawater on him could prove deadly. Not only does it weaken him to the point where he can't swim, but he loses all abilities related to the fruit until dry.

  • Knives
  • Buggy keeps a number of knives on himself. His favored method of using them seems to be slipping the blades between his fingers like claws.

  • Luck
  • This may as well be listed here. Buggy has the extraordinary ability to fail upwards. While he likes to see himself as cunning and manipulative, he seems to survive by being in the right place, at the right time, and often uses this to his advantage. He's also good at talking himself up and convincing people to follow his ideas.

  • Inventory: 1- Clothes on his back.
    2. Knives. He has an unknown number of small knives on his person.
